Methodological Foundations of Eero Tarasti's Musical Semiotics
View details
Notes: preface by Eero Tarasti
Annotation: This book is an introduction to Eero Tarasti's works on music, as well as musical semiotics in general. It covers a wide range of sources from multiple disciplinary fields in order to familiarize the reader with the basic language and common references of semiotic inquiries in music. Starting with the basics of structural and Peircean semiotics, theories of discourse, topic theory and others, and their application to music, the book moves on to discuss their interpretation in Tarasti's decade-long oeuvre.

Mapping Musical Signification

Annotation: This book is a unique attempt to systematize the latest research on all that music connotes. Musicological reflections on musically expressive content have been pursued for some decades now, in spite of the formalist prejudices that can still hindermusicians and music lovers. The author organizes this body of research so that both professionals and everyday listeners can benefit from it – in plain English, but without giving up the level of depth required by the subject matter. Two criteria have guided his choice among the many ways to speak about musical meaning: its relevance to performance, and its suitability to the teaching context. The legacy of the so-called art music, without an interpretive approach that links ancient traditions to our present, runs the risk of missing the link to the new generations of musicians and listeners. Complementing the theoretical, systematic content, each chapter includes a wealth of examples, including the so-called popular music.

Annotation: The 20th century produced a significant number of geniuses. In music, we had Strawinsky, Debussy, Puccini, Strauss, to name just a few from different countries, and our own Villa-Lobos. His presence in the music scene is of great importance. Villa-Lobos, a profound observer of life, never missed an opportunity to invent new processes of musical creation for himself and for the teachers of Orpheonic Singing. Thus, in 1934, a method of creating melodies coming from nature itself emerged: the Chart to record the Melody of the Mountains of Brazil. "The maestro sought a kind of representation of Brazil based on these geographical symbols", as Dr. Rodrigo Felicíssimo points out in his doctoral thesis, which was promptly transformed into a book.

Other title information: Popular Music, Politics and Social Protest
Annotation: This monograph offers a unique analysis of social protest in popular music. It presents theoretical descriptions, methodological tools, and an approach that encompasses various fields of musicology, cultural studies, semiotics, discourse analysis, media studies, and political and social sciences. The author argues that protest songs should be taken as a musical genre on their own. He points out that the general approach, when discussing these songs, has been so far that of either analyzing the lyrics or the social context. For some reason, the music itself has been often overlooked. This book attempts to fill this gap. Its central thesis is that a complete overview of these repertoires demands a thorough interaction among contextual, lyrical, and musical elements together. To accomplish this, the author develops a novel model that systemizes and investigates musical repertoires. The model is then applied to four case studies, those, too, chosen among topicsthat are little (or not at all) frequented by scholars.

Annotation: This edited book covers many topics in musicological literature, gathering various approaches to music studies that encapsulate the vivid relation music has to society. It focusses on repertoires and geographical areas that have not previously been well frequented in musicology. As readers will see, music has many roles to play in society. Music can be a generator of social phenomena, or a result of them; it can enhance or activate social actions, or simply co-habit with them. Above all, music has a stable position within society, in that it actively participates in it. Music can either describe or prescribe social aspects; musicians may have a certain position/role in society (e.g., the “popstar” as fashion leader, spokesman for political issues, etc.). Depending on the type of society, music may have a certain “meaning” or “function” (music does not mean the same thing everywhere in the world). Lastly, music can define a society, and it is not uncommon for it to best define a particular historical moment.

Annotation: This publication is a bibliographic compendium of Lithuanian sheet music from 1990 to 2015 compiled in chronological order and presented to readers. The difficult period of restored independence, when sheet music publishing underwent fundamental changes, brought chaos to the field of registration. The ISMN Lithuanian agency began to operate only in 1994, and some publishers even after 1994 did not register their publications with the ISMN agency. As a result, there has been a gap in the registration of publications published aborad, which were registered electronically or in a fragmentary manner. The purpose of this bibliography is to collect and systematise all information about publications of Lithuanian sheet music since 1990, published both in Lithuania and abroad, and to describe them according to international standards. Notes: This book was originally published under the title Musica mathematica. Tradicijos ir inovacijos šiuolaikineje muzikoje by Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater (Vilnius: Lietuvos muzikos ir teatro akademija, 2013, ISBN 978-609-8071-10-8)
Annotation: The concept of musica mathematica seeks to accurately examine the itnersection of two seemingly radically different subject areas. From the perspective of a European perception, the definition of the science of music was a result of the Pythagorean concept of universal harmony. The Pythagoreans were the first in European culture to raise the issue of uniting music and mathematics, sound and number. In the three parts of the monograph, versatile cases of the itnersection of music and mathematics are displayed, moving from philosophical and aesthetic considerations about mathesis to practical studies, discussing the interaction between music and other kinds of art (architecture, painting, poetry and literature) and providing a practical research of contemporary music compositions.

Annotation: In the current global world the interaction between cultures penetrates into musical practices and discourses, radically affecting the sociocultural imagination and altering the established shapes of cultural territories. Yet the history of music demonstrates that the dynamics of cultural encounters and segregations has always been a key factor in the formation of individual and collective identities and in the understanding of other cultures. Cultural expansions and, conversely, the trajectories of displacement of cultural expression are to a varied extent affected by the political, economic, technological and other dimensions of dissemination of musical practices and traditions. In the modern age, the extramusical factors are of equal significance to textual (creation) and contextual (dissemination and reception) configurations of sociocultural interactions. The understanding of sociocultural interactions and borders plays an important role in the appropriation of the musical past and the revival of cultural memory.

Philosophies of Performance

Annotation: In the years 2008-2009 The Finnish Academy of Sciences funded a research project entitled PHILOSOPHIES OF PERFORMANCE - Finnish music, art and avant-garde. The project focused on temporal, i.e. performing arts, their background philosophies and signifying processes. The empirical material was mostly about Finnish art. Yet, the idea was to develop also "universal" theoretical models relevant to other traditions and fields. Music served as the core phenomenon but it was also scrutinised in its intertextual connections. This anthology offers some results but also contributions from other scholars whom the project stimulated. The authors are Aurea Dominiguez, Joan Grimalt, Sergio Lanza, Otto Lehto, Grisell Macdonel Dario Martinelli, Bogumila Mika, Lina Navickaté-Martinelli, Pärttyli Rinne, Filip Sikorski, Eero Tarasti, Juha Torvinen, Alessia R. Annotation: In this study, Gabriel Pareyon presents a theory of musical meaning formation in the context of intersemiosis, that is, the translation of meaning from one cognitive domain to another cognitive domain (e.g. from mathematics to music, or to speech or graphic forms). From this perspective, the degree of coherence of a musical systems relies on a synecdochic intersemiosis: a system of related signs within other comparable and correlated systems. The author analyzes the modalities of such correlations, exploring their general and particular traits, and their operational bounds. Accordingly, the notion analofy is used as a rich concept through its two definitions quoted by the classical literature - proportion and paradigm, enormously valuable in establishinf mesurement, likeness and affinity criteria. At the same time, original arguments by Benoit B. Mandelbrot (1924-2010) are revised, alongside a systematic critique of the literature on the subject. In fact, connecting Charles S. Peirce!s synechism with Mandelbrot's fractality is on of the main developnets of the presents study.

Annotation: The pupose of this book is twofold: First, being epistemological in nature, it is concerned with identifying methodologically and philosophically valuable achievements of contemporary musical semiotics. The second purpose is a pragmatic one. It stems from the need to interpret the theoretical thought of Eero Tarasti. There is no doubt that today's semiotic-musical thought, in the most general terms, is dominated by two central names and the theories behind them. The names are Jean-Jacques Nattiez and Eero Tarasti. While reconstructing Tarasti's theory, I use the text interpretation method suggested by Gunter Grimm. It originaterd with the general theory of reception formulated by E.D. Hirsch.

Annotation: Zygmunt Krauze is the founder of a new current in art: unistic (unitary) music. He developed this concept in the first period of his artistic work, inspired by the unistic paintings of Władysław Strzemiński. Traces of this style are also detectable in Krauze’s later post-unistic works. Unistic music is characterised by a paradoxical unity in diversity. Most of the composer’s statements collected in this paper refer to specific features of unism in music. Other, more general comments concern the essence of music, the composer’s personal stance, the creative process, the autonomy of the composer, the audience and the performers, etc. Two longer texts by Zygmunt Krauze have been quoted in full. One can be considered as a unistic manifesto, while the other is a kind of personal credo.

Annotation: This essay is the third in a series of works devoted to musical hermeneutics. In the first, I dealt with the basic concepts of music ontology: movement, play, being and time, drawing inspiration from the hermeneutical philosophy of Schleiermacher, Diltey, Heidegger and Gadamer. Then, inspired by the thought of Paul Ricoeur, I analysed the conceptual category of musical narrative. Even then, in these considerations, the category of space appeared many times, inseparable from human experience in its temporal and spatial structure and, as it turns out, inextricably linked to the experience of music. In the reception of music, we are undoubtedly given a certain "temporal" sound-musical space.

I hope that what is retained here will encourage readers, whether they are students of music, musicology, or semiotics, more established researchers, or inquiring minds of any kind, to learn more about musical semiotics. Annotation: Systems of Musical Sense breathes new life into the field of music semiotics in its intuitive mix of logical rigor and hermeneutical interpretation and unique approach to paradigmatic analysis (Ruwet, Nattiez) and established theories of tinal music (Schoenberg). More significantly, te authors lay out an entirely new and innovative theory in their concept of musical homestasis, a phenomenon closely related to the fundamental law of physics which states that all things set in motion, organic and inorganic, tend to return to their initial point of rest. In tonal music, which also incorporates teology, this can take place at different levels, embodied by various parameters. The sensitive analyses here demonstrate ramifications of this axiom and cast new light on the structuring and effects de sens of tinal genres ranging in diversity from Bach chorales to Wagnerian opera. The culmination of mera tha a decade of research by this tea of widely published music scholars, the book is also a starting point: cognitivists, theorists, musicologists, and others can use the analytic methos "as is", develop it further, or transform it.The systems unvailed here need not be confined to tonal, "common-practice" art music. As universal axiom at least as dependable as the gestaltists "law of good continuation", the theory of homeostasis reveals new dimensions in earlier musical style and thos of more contemporary vintage.
