Semiological Reduction
View details
Other title information: a critique of the deconstructionist movement in postmodern thought
Annotation: This book interprets Derrida and looks beyond deconstructionism. It is a critique that identifies a pervasive flaw in Derrida's thinking: the semiological reduction that permeates deconstructionist theory and postmodernism in general. The critique focuses on Derrida, but its conclusions may be applied to other major figures in the postmodern tradition who espouse the variant of Saussurean semiology that reduces all meaning to the signification of signs. This book challenges the philosophy of deconstruction at its roots, and does so on the basis of a diligent reading of central texts and an understanding of the tradition of Continental philosophy providing the context for Derridian thought

An introudction to systemic functional linguistics
- Edition
- 2 edition
View details
Annotation: Systemic linguistics is an approach which views language as a strategic, meaning making resource. This text, an introduction to this semiotic approach, focuses on the analysis of authentic, everyday texts, and asks both how people use language to make meanings, and how language itself is organised to enable those meanings to be made.

Contexts of Pre-Novel Narrative
View details
Other title information: The European Tradition
Annotation: While being concerned with the theory and forms of early narrative, the present collection of essays presents a history of narrative rather than poetics of narrative. Rather than offering to write a coherent narrative about the historical development of narrative before " the rise of the novel", the volume presents stages in the development towards that elusive and unstable form of narrative, giving the reader what in another context has been referred to as an "exemplary history" (Reed 1981) of narrative.

Annotation: Semiotic theory, which has restricted its focus largely to human forms of signification, is transformed by Robert S. Corrington into a semiotics of nature itself. Corrington situates the divide between "nature naturing" and "nature natured" within the context of classical American pragmaticism and postmodern psychoanalysis. At the heart of this new metaphysics is an insistence that all signs participate in larger orders of meaning that are natural and religious. Meanings embodied in nature point beyond nature to the mystery inherent in positioned codes and signs

Le pouvoir comme passion
View details
Notes: Together with a debate between Algirdas J. Greimas and Paul Ricœur that happened in 23.05.1989.
We know how to decipher a statement that represents passion, but do we know how to recognize a text that manifests passion without transcribing it? Semiotic research had reached a point where it was absolutely necessary to be able to observe this direct inscription of the lived, of the sensitive in the framework of a given discourse. The purest experience consisted of starting from an emotionally flat text, in its writing, and yet captivating, to demonstrate what was working on it behind the scenes, a quality of presence that disturbed the text and troubled it deeply, while it was insignificant at the strictly linguistic level: Power as passion is the first experience of highlighting inarticulate discursive phenomena. - Readings On Popular Culture For Writers
View details
Annotation: The transformation from a text-centred to an image-centred culture presents a certain challenge to writing teachers. How can such a textually based enterprise as writing instruction respond to a video-driven world? How are reading and writing related to seeing and hearing? Can the habits of critical thinking that are so central to the analytical tasks of academic writing be adapted to McLuhan's Brave New World? We have written Signs of Life in the U.S.A. because we believe not only that such bridges can be built but that building them represents our best hope for training a new generation of students in critical thinking and writing. Thus, while the goal of our text remains the traditional one of helping students become strong writers of argument and analysis, our method departs from convention by using printed texts to guide students in the analysis and interpretation of an unwritten world: The world of American popular culture, wherein images, often electronically conveyed, can be more important than words.

Annotation: Jamake Highwater, the best-selling author of Myth and Sexuality and the Primal Mind, continues his voyage into the realms of myth, art and contemporary culture exploring the way society views its art and artists and the way our art and artists gaze back at us. Organized around the twenty-two cards of the Tarot Major Arcana, this book presents a dazzling range of controversial subjects, including the puritan division of art into hight and low and the direct influence of "popular" forms in contemporary artists, the image of the homosexual as outlow, iconography as destiny, imagination as political powe, the reinvetion of the past and thriumph of the dream life.

Annotation: The present work will examine the constitution of Tel Quel's multipositionality (Boltanski 1973: 3-26), or funtion as a geometric locus, as the social creation of a symbolic good that combined all signs of intellectual radicality characteristic of the period. My aim is to analyze Tel Quel as a relatively heterogenous and changing object by exploring in a specific context its constitution, ascension, and decline as an intellectual avant-garde.

The Socialness of Things
View details
Other title information: Essays on the Socio-Semiotics of Objects
Notes: This book is based on the proceedings of an international conference which took place at the University of Toronto in 1990.
Annotation: The term "socialness" is a neologism that is used in this volume to call attention to the integration of objects in the social fabric of everyday life. Specialists in material culture studies have understood for some time, that societies consist of both people and artifacts. It is not only with people and animals that we interact but also with objects. The chapters in the first part of the volume deal with artefacts such as furniture, mementoes, and knickknacks, which can be manipulated as social "others" – entities with which one can socialize or make a part in socialisation processes such as establishing a bond, conveying a message, etc. The second section of articles concerns artefacts whose dimensions take such proportions that humans become dwarfed with respect to them, such as tourists travelling to visit them or shoppers being herded through their artificial geography as if flowing within an oversized organism. In the concluding section, the artefacts examined are by contrast so adjusted to the proportion of the human body, so close to it that they become an indissociable part of the social persona sticking to the skin, expressing better than any other means of the socialness - fashion.

The intermittences of meaning are here, first of all, a plurality of objects of all kinds (novels, short stories or poems, in French or in English; literary discourses, exchanges of letters, snippets of everyday conversation; daily practices or aesthetic objects) that cross and that are punctuated by the return of the same question: that of the meaning of its emergence, of its modes of manifestation and even, one might say, of its actions. It is also from point to point and from one end to the other, the regulated play of singularities and recurrences, the alternation of constituted species and morphologies in the making, the interplay of discontinuities and sequences, on the support, and the dynamics of places and forces. It is, in the thickness of the texts, the reversible exchange between the vectorized space where the figures are deployed and the figural substrate that its prosody and its contours imprint there. It is finally and above all the way of accompaniment which links the score, the questioning of the meaning: not so much its grasp as its pursuit and rather than its escape, its fugue. Reader Response to Literature
View details
Other title information: To Empirical Dimension
Annotation: The research reported here lays the groundwork for further empirical investigations of reader response. It also provides new insights into how worlds and structures relate to and reproduce our inner and outer space, how the choice of text and critical approach can predetermine responses, and how interpretation depends in part on the cultural forces we reflect and reproduce. This volume does not present a more or less random sample of texts and studies dealing with reader response. Rather, the writers were selected because of their empirical expertise, and because they approached the study of reader response from a perspective which would provide possible answers as to the nature and pattern of reader response to literature.

Approaching Theatre
View details
Notes: Originally published as Théâtre, modes d'approche (1987)
Annotation: This book is concerned with the analysis of the theatrical event and of all the elements that make up a perdormance – the text, the actor, the space, the spectator, the social circumstances. Here, an international group of scholars approaches theatre – viewed in its traditional guise as a physical entertainment of a text before spectators – from a variety of directions and using different methodologies. While there is a general orientation toward semiotic analysis, historical, sociological, and anthropological approaches are represented as well.
