Other title information: interpretačné sondy na predmet Základy umeleckej komunikácie a interpretácie

Annotation: University textbooks continuously accompany the reader with current examples of the dimensions of artistic communication and interpretation. While the previous volume, Fundamentals of Artistic Communication and Interpretation, represented a modeling entry, or rather an overview of artistic communication and interpretation, its subsequent continuation, Into the Miracles /interpretative probes on the subject Fundamentals of Artistic Communication and Interpretation/, expands on other reception and communication strategies. For students of the cultural studies study program, it is an exercise teaching material, complementary to the in-depth study of the subject Fundamentals of Artistic Communication and Interpretation in connection with some focal models of selected representatives of the so-called Nitra school. This time, the dominant focus of attention was completely narrowed to the international multi-genre site-specific festival in the countryside, Into the Miracles (July 1 - July 4, 2023), which was unique and special in several aspects. The concept of this event was a multi-day pilgrimage for miracles along an 80 km long walking route through the regions of south-central Slovakia. The festival thus provided an extraordinary experience of the journey/procession (of artistic communication as a journey). The event was ideal for cultural and aesthetic-scientific studies as an example of researching the laws of reception, artistic communication and interpretation, so to speak, in an outdoor environment with the dominant backdrop of the landscape and its picturesqueness, natural environment and overall rural color. At the same time, it offered an extremely diverse variability of the reception semiosis of artistic miracles by domestic and foreign creators, which were distributed across the country within the set hiking route. The multi-day pilgrimage for the sacred dimension of beauty also became an opportunity to perceive the narrative level of the entire festival, providing in its dramaturgy the uniqueness of scenes/phenomena of miracles and the need for its search or revitalization.

Annotation: University teaching texts provide students of the study program Culturology with a practically modeling entry, or rather an overview of artistic communication and interpretation, which will guide them through several examples of reception and communication practice. The recapitulation sequence documents the story of a specific 2022/2023 semester cycle, partly of a monothematic nature. They are united by the concretization of one model of artistic communication and interpretation (chapter no. 1 Teaching texts/instruction sheets on reception aesthetics). The starting point is reception aesthetics honed and conceptually profiled at the Institute of Literary and Artistic Communication of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Bratislava in Nitra, from which the texts of individual chapters are subsequently (referentially) created, embedded in the university pedagogical practice of the study of Culturology, and applied as a motif (chapter no. 2 Journeys of one semester cycle).

(Re)considering Roman Jakobson

edited by Elin Sütiste | Remo Gramigna | Jonathan Griffin | Silvi Salupere

Edition
1 edition

Linguistics University of Tartu Press 9789949036301 Available

View details

Annotation: This book was initiated by a graduate course of Elin Sütiste about semiotics of Roman Jakobson (1896–1982), given in the Department of Semiotics, University of Tartu. The contributions include articles by the doctoral students as well as co-lectures, visiting scholars and colleagues. These seminars affirmed that Jakobson was truly an ambitious, forward-thinking scholar who exerted himself to establish semiotics as a discipline. Though Jakobson identified himself as a philologist, he played a pivotal role in the development and institutionalization of semiotics. Jakobson’s ability to grasp the potential of new ideas and to inspire others was remarkable. Juri Lotman has commented that “Wherever his fate of a mid-20th-century man took him, everywhere Jakobson attracted a group of scientists that soon grew into a scientific centre of global importance”.

Annotation: This book, in this re-edition, contains a broad update of the research on the topic of prenatal styles. What is proposed here is a psychophysiological aesthetics and at the same time a semiotics that provides tools to diagnose "senseless" pathological behaviors as symptoms of an obsessive or regressive condition corresponding to a certain prenatal evolutionary phase. The volume is aimed at a wide and varied audience. In particular, it is proposed as a training tool for teachers of verbal and non-verbal expressive disciplines, for teachers and students of humanistic disciplines, for educators, animators, community assistants and health personnel.

Other title information: traditions and innovations in contemporary music

Notes: This book was originally published under the title Musica mathematica. Tradicijos ir inovacijos šiuolaikineje muzikoje by Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater (Vilnius: Lietuvos muzikos ir teatro akademija, 2013, ISBN 978-609-8071-10-8)

Annotation: The concept of musica mathematica seeks to accurately examine the itnersection of two seemingly radically different subject areas. From the perspective of a European perception, the definition of the science of music was a result of the Pythagorean concept of universal harmony. The Pythagoreans were the first in European culture to raise the issue of uniting music and mathematics, sound and number. In the three parts of the monograph, versatile cases of the itnersection of music and mathematics are displayed, moving from philosophical and aesthetic considerations about mathesis to practical studies, discussing the interaction between music and other kinds of art (architecture, painting, poetry and literature) and providing a practical research of contemporary music compositions.

Parallel title: Parallel title: Greimas arti ir toli

Annotation: Algirdas Julien Greimas (born Algirdas Julius Greimas) is one the most prominent creators of semiotics who laid the foundations of the Paris School of Semiotics known all over the world. He was also a famous linguist who researched Lithuanian mythology. Algirdas Julien Greimas is one of the most prominent Lithuanians in the international world of science, in many aspects compared to Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The greatest influence on the life and works of Greimas came from French culture renowned for its science, literature and art. Nevertheless, the time spent in Lithuania was also significant. Greimas himself viewed Lithuanian and western (French) periods of his life as correlation between two cultures. Therefore, every moment of his life is important to us, each moment contributing to the whole picture and enriching his life. Neither Greimas' childhood nor his youth which is the genesis of intellectual and aesthetic signs is reviewed in literature. Various authors tend to start writing Greimas'biography starting from his years in Vytautas Magnus University. Professor Eero Tarasti, the president of the International Association for Semiotic Studies, offered me to prepare a work about Greimas' life in Lithuania. As I myself studied in Kupiškis and knew a lot of things about the Greimas family, I decided to look at Greimas'childhood period in Kupiškis. The sources I used in this work are as follows: Greimas' words about his childhood, national and personal archives, press of those days and stories told by those who knew the Greimas family. My experience with exceptionally gifted children in National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art in Vilnius and consulting with famous scientist has helped me to discuss the genesis of intellectual and aesthetic signs in Greimas' biography. As for the form of the work, I have chosen to use the form of an exposition with elements of a poster presentation, which allowed me to participate in significant scientific forums in France, Finland, Russia and China. In Lithuania, in those places where Greimas lived, my exposition contributed to the studies of his biography, organisation of conferences and dedication to Greimas. As it turned out, the prestigious gymnasiums where Greimas studied in Šiauliai and Marijampolė established in 1851 and 1867 have raised about half (9 out of 20) of those who signed the Act of Independence of Lithuania on 16 February 1918 and 12 out of 100 most outstanding persons in Lithuania in a millennium. In this respect these two gymnasiums are the only ones in Lithuania. It should also be mentioned that Greimas attended lectures in Vytautas Magnus University by famous Lithuanian scientists Mykolas Romeris, Vladas Jurgutis, Vosylius Sezemanas and Jonas Bučas who later contributed to laying the foundation for the science of semiotics.

Philosophies of Performance

Music The Semiotic Society of Finland 9525431371 Available

View details

Annotation: In the years 2008-2009 The Finnish Academy of Sciences funded a research project entitled PHILOSOPHIES OF PERFORMANCE - Finnish music, art and avant-garde. The project focused on temporal, i.e. performing arts, their background philosophies and signifying processes. The empirical material was mostly about Finnish art. Yet, the idea was to develop also "universal" theoretical models relevant to other traditions and fields. Music served as the core phenomenon but it was also scrutinised in its intertextual connections. This anthology offers some results but also contributions from other scholars whom the project stimulated. The authors are Aurea Dominiguez, Joan Grimalt, Sergio Lanza, Otto Lehto, Grisell Macdonel Dario Martinelli, Bogumila Mika, Lina Navickaté-Martinelli, Pärttyli Rinne, Filip Sikorski, Eero Tarasti, Juha Torvinen, Alessia R. Annotation: Music, in some forms, declares itself autonomous and absolute. But semiotics has taught us that no sign system can function alone, isolated from other texts. Correspondences and interrelationships of arts have always been fertile soil from which musical meanings to grow. Thus, among the topics of these proceedings, one finds music and painting, ekphrasis, interpretation, semiotic theory of music, pragmatism, aesthetics, topics, narrativity, music and media, opera, cinema, literature, music history, hermeneutics, dance and music psychology. Musical Signification is a world-wide research project that tries to open new avenues for an innovative science of music as a meaningful practice throughout the ages.

Analysis and Interpretation of Brazilian Pagode

Music International Semiotics Institute 9519865497 Available

View details

Annotation: Live Samba takes as its main topic the pagode movement, which apperead in the 1980s as a re-invention of the samba tradition. Deeply grounded in the most idiosyncratic musical patterns of samba, pagode countered the hegemony of the samba-schools and their media appeal. Pagode, too, became a major commercial success. It appeared in a transitional period, at the moment the music industry was shifting its focus towards lowe classes of the population. As a result, pagode and other local-based styles led the way to a recoinfiguration of Brazilian music. The transitional nature of this moment is reflected in the ambivalent nature of tpagode meanings. Those meanings were firmly attached to the local sphere, while at the same time open to communocation with translocal levels. In Live Samba, the author analyses pagode as a practice comprising both musical traits and symbolic associations with other spheres of Brazilian culture. The book looks at pagode songs through the frames of the samba tradition, of Brazilian society, of the commodity environment, and of musical signification, and it provides an introductory survey of samba and of the Brazilian music indurstry.

Les Universaux en musique

edited by Costin Miereanu | Xavier Hascher
