Multiculturalism as Multimodal Communication

Other title information: A Semiotic Perspective
Annotation: This highly readable book develops a numanistic, and specifically semiotic approach to multiculturalism. It reveals how semiotics provides fresh and valuable insights into multiculturalism: in contrast to the binary logic of dualistic philosophy, semiotic logic does not understand the value of truth in rigid terms of ‘true’ or ‘false’, ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ only. The value of truth resides in meaning, which is a dynamic, evolutionary phenomenon, rooted, nevertheless, in factuality. Drawing on recent developments in biosemiotics, the book presents a theoretical approach to multiculturalism, regarding the lives of people living in multicultural environments. Rather than analyzing political or economic phenomena, it offers a semiotic analysis of multiculturalism and discusses its educational implications. It also invites readers to regard learning as a phenomenon of ecological sign growth and to understand multiculturalism along the same lines. As such, it brings together the life and social sciences and the humanities in a unified perspective, in an approach fitting postmodernism.

Philosophy of Education in the Semiotics of Charles Peirce

Other title information: A Cosmology of Learning and Loving
Annotation: This book investigates the philosophy of education implicit in the semiotics of Charles Peirce. It is commonly accepted that the acts of learning and teaching imply affection of some sort, and Charles Peirce’s evolutionary semiotics thoroughly explains learning as an act of love. According to Peirce, we evolved to learn and to love; learning from other people has proved to be one of the best ways to carry out our infinite pursuit of truth, since love is the very characteristic of truth. As such, the teacher and the student practise love in their relation with one another. Grounded within an edusemiotics framework and also exploring the iconic turn in semiotics and recent developments in biosemiotics, this is the first book-length study of Peirce’s contribution to the philosophy of education.

Other title information: semiotica iesirii din păcatul originar
Annotation: To outline a semiotics of the original sin of falling into the temptation of lying, disobedience and betrayal, a sin whose signs still disturb the life of the human being, is the primary goal of this book. To come out of the darkness of error, to enter the light of the meaning found through the image and likeness of the Primordial Truth, is defined as an aspiration following a trial given with joy to all who are open to wisdom and love.

- Semiotic and Hermeneutic Aspects of the Philosophy of Bergson
Linguistics International Semiotics Institute | Semiotic Society of Finland 9519865403 Available
View details
Annotation: Bergson discusses the questions of philosophic truth in a way that allows an interpretation in terms of contemporary semiotics and hermeneutics. In his famous "Philosophical intuition" he defines this kind of truth as "something simple, infinitely simple, so extraordinarily simple that the philosopher has never succeded in saying it". This dialectic between intuition and its 'saying' is examined as the hermeneutics of understanding and interpretation. At the same time, this study attempts to open new insights in Bergson's philosophy, and especially in his notion of Intellectual Effort. Kristian Bankov, in his essay, considers this concept not only central to Bergson's philosophy, but also a key to the sign-nature of our whole being and existence in the world.

Annotation: This common-sense evidence that music and the stage are consubstantial in the Lyric Theatre, that they necessarily operate in symbiosis, this evidence also says, in a double sense, that their union is in no way obvious in itself, that it is a problem for both. The theoretical sketches that make up this essay bear witness to the singular link between event and truth, between music and representational stage, that Wieland Wagner was able to establish for the first time in the history of the Lyric Theatre.
