Annotation: University textbooks continuously accompany the reader with current examples of the dimensions of artistic communication and interpretation. While the previous volume, Fundamentals of Artistic Communication and Interpretation, represented a modeling entry, or rather an overview of artistic communication and interpretation, its subsequent continuation, Into the Miracles /interpretative probes on the subject Fundamentals of Artistic Communication and Interpretation/, expands on other reception and communication strategies. For students of the cultural studies study program, it is an exercise teaching material, complementary to the in-depth study of the subject Fundamentals of Artistic Communication and Interpretation in connection with some focal models of selected representatives of the so-called Nitra school. This time, the dominant focus of attention was completely narrowed to the international multi-genre site-specific festival in the countryside, Into the Miracles (July 1 - July 4, 2023), which was unique and special in several aspects. The concept of this event was a multi-day pilgrimage for miracles along an 80 km long walking route through the regions of south-central Slovakia. The festival thus provided an extraordinary experience of the journey/procession (of artistic communication as a journey). The event was ideal for cultural and aesthetic-scientific studies as an example of researching the laws of reception, artistic communication and interpretation, so to speak, in an outdoor environment with the dominant backdrop of the landscape and its picturesqueness, natural environment and overall rural color. At the same time, it offered an extremely diverse variability of the reception semiosis of artistic miracles by domestic and foreign creators, which were distributed across the country within the set hiking route. The multi-day pilgrimage for the sacred dimension of beauty also became an opportunity to perceive the narrative level of the entire festival, providing in its dramaturgy the uniqueness of scenes/phenomena of miracles and the need for its search or revitalization.

Annotation: My dissertation focuses on the study of myths and their semiotic mechanisms that appear in contemporary mass culture texts. Although myths and mass culture as a whole have been widely discussed from the perspectives of various disciplines, there are no studies that deal with the systematization of mass culture mythology and the semiotic definition of mythic markers. The topic of this dissertation is interesting not only from a general theoretical, philosophical, anthropological and semiotic perspective, but also for practical reasons. I believe that I can convincingly show in my work that the study and identification of semiotic mechanisms of mass culture myths is applicable in the field of marketing semiotics and social communication. In my dissertation, I first compare mass culture mythology from a sociological, philosophical-anthropological and semiotic perspective. This allows me to combine the two main epistemological approaches to myth research and treat myth as a holistic meta-concept on the one hand, and approach myth as a cultural text on the other. Based on the framework I have created, I will analyze various texts of mass culture in my work and focus on identifying the most common and enduring structural units of mass culture mythology. How do I define a smaller unit of myth? In defining it, I will rely on two structural principles of myth: the emic unit, which I denote by the concept of mythologeme, and the hybrid unit, which I denote by the concept of mytheme. In the course of the analysis, I will highlight the following mythologemes: Fate, Journey, Universality, Catastrophe, Golden Age and Mother Nature, and the mythemes: Transformation and Return. In addition to distinguishing the aforementioned mythologemes and mythemes, I will highlight their value and function in mythological discourse. Fate and Journey help to integrate the life of the individual into the whole. The mythologeme of Mother Nature is associated with the existential need of a person to search for authenticity and identity. The mythologemes of the Universe, Catastrophe and Golden Age constitute the human time-spatial past-present-future triad. The latter are related to human questions about the origin of the world, nostalgia for the past and fears about the future. The mythologeme of Transformation points to the idea of miracle and the mythologeme of Return to the time-spatial axis of the human semiosphere, to orderliness. The last chapter of the work applies the theoretical framework developed in the dissertation to specific case studies. The first of them is dedicated to the analysis of the TV political marketing of the Ukrainian politician Darth Vader, and there I show how archetypal mythological meanings were included in the structure of the political narrative. The second case study focuses on the development of a specific brand, which I did in collaboration with the well-known Russian pop artist Manizha, and where I apply the mythologeme of Mother Nature.Further research into mythologemes and mythemes could open up new semiotic markers and thereby expand the field of application of semiotics, as well as help to better understand the mythological basis of culture. This dissertation presents a semiotic study of myth revealing in contemporary mass cultural texts and exploration of its inner semiotic machinery. Although a variety of studies have been devoted to myth, and quite a few studies have tackled mass culture issues, less attention has been given to the systematic articulation of mass cultural mythology and its markers, which reveal its inner semiotic machinery. Those issues are relevant not only from a general theoretical philosophical, anthropological, and semiotic point of view, but also have concrete applicability in marketing semiotics and social communications. Firstly, I discuss mass culture under an emancipatory umbrella approach and explore mass culture mythology from the sociological, philosophical-anthropological and semiotic perspectives. Secondly, I combine two main epistemological attitudes of myth and integrate a holistic object of research – which appears as a meta-concept – from one side, and a text of culture – mass cultural narratives around brands conveying their main values – from the other side . Thirdly, I discuss the smallest units of mass culture mythology and explore its most widespread structural units. I classify the smallest units of myth by their structural principles: the emic units (mythologemes) and the hybrid ones (mythemes). There are the mythologemes of Fate, Course, Universe, Catastrophe, Golden Age, and Mother Nature, and the mythemes of Transformation and Backtracking considered in detail. The main existential values of those smallest mythological units are discussed. The mythologemes of Fate and Course help to understand individual life as a part of an integral whole. The mythologeme of Mother Nature relates to the existential search for inner authenticity and identity. The mythologemes of Universe, Catastrophe, and Golden Age constitute an integral triadic idea about time and space (past-present-future) and reflect the human existential quest for an explanation of the world origin, nostalgia for the past and fears about the future. The mytheme of Transformation represents the idea of mythological miracle, and the mytheme of Backtracking appeals to the idea of a mastered time and space. Fourthly, I extend the process to find more minimal units of myth in cultural texts of different genres. The first case is dedicated to close analysis of the television communication of the Ukrainian politician Darth Vader. This case demonstrates the combination of archaic meanings and contemporary forms of myth within a narrative, producing new powerful connotations. The second case applies the Mother Nature mythologeme as a branding tool for building a coherent image of a musical artist. The further exploration of the mythologemes and mythemes and articulation of other semiotic markers of myth systematically enriches a profound understanding of human mind and culture.

Annotation: This book gives a concise history of biophysics in contemporary China, from about 1949 to 1976. It outlines how a science speciality evolved from an ambiguous and amorphous field into a fully-fledged academic discipline in the socio-institutional contexts of contemporary China. The book relates how, while initially consisting of cell biologists, the Chinese biophysics community redirected their disciplinary priorities toward rocket science in the late 1950s to accommodate the national interests of the time. Biophysicists who had worked on biological-sounding rockets were drawn to the military sector and continued to contribute to human spaceflight in post-Mao China. Besides the rocket-and-space missions which provided the material context for biophysics to expand in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Chinese biophysicists also created research and educational programs surrounding biophysics by exploiting the institutional opportunities afforded by the policy emphasis on science's role to drive modernization. Annotation: Algirdas Julien Greimas (born Algirdas Julius Greimas) is one the most prominent creators of semiotics who laid the foundations of the Paris School of Semiotics known all over the world. He was also a famous linguist who researched Lithuanian mythology. Algirdas Julien Greimas is one of the most prominent Lithuanians in the international world of science, in many aspects compared to Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The greatest influence on the life and works of Greimas came from French culture renowned for its science, literature and art. Nevertheless, the time spent in Lithuania was also significant. Greimas himself viewed Lithuanian and western (French) periods of his life as correlation between two cultures. Therefore, every moment of his life is important to us, each moment contributing to the whole picture and enriching his life. Neither Greimas' childhood nor his youth which is the genesis of intellectual and aesthetic signs is reviewed in literature. Various authors tend to start writing Greimas'biography starting from his years in Vytautas Magnus University. Professor Eero Tarasti, the president of the International Association for Semiotic Studies, offered me to prepare a work about Greimas' life in Lithuania. As I myself studied in Kupiškis and knew a lot of things about the Greimas family, I decided to look at Greimas'childhood period in Kupiškis. The sources I used in this work are as follows: Greimas' words about his childhood, national and personal archives, press of those days and stories told by those who knew the Greimas family.My experience with exceptionally gifted children in National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art in Vilnius and consulting with famous scientist has helped me to discuss the genesis of intellectual and aesthetic signs in Greimas' biography. As for the form of the work, I have chosen to use the form of an exposition with elements of a poster presentation, which allowed me to participate in significant scientific forums in France, Finland, Russia and China. In Lithuania, in those places where Greimas lived, my exposition contributed to the studies of his biography, organisation of conferences and dedication to Greimas. As it turned out, the prestigious gymnasiums where Greimas studied in Šiauliai and Marijampolė established in 1851 and 1867 have raised about half (9 out of 20) of those who signed the Act of Independence of Lithuania on 16 February 1918 and 12 out of 100 most outstanding persons in Lithuania in a millennium. In this respect these two gymnasiums are the only ones in Lithuania. It should also be mentioned that Greimas attended lectures in Vytautas Magnus University by famous Lithuanian scientists Mykolas Romeris, Vladas Jurgutis, Vosylius Sezemanas and Jonas Bučas who later contributed to laying the foundation for the science of semiotics.

Annotation: The present doctoral dissertation is an exercise in exposition, comparison, criticism and construction, and this is the result of a project conceived ten years ago. We have taken different traditions of legal reasoning, and by juxtaposing them have sought to clarify and assess semiotic presuppositions, in order to outline a theoretical framework of legal semiotics that would help to lay the foundations for semiotic theory of legal argumentation. These semiotic presuppositions have been the object of our study at the University of Tartu since our bachelor's thesis (defended in 2001) and master's thesis (defended in 2006). Our interest in legal semiotics was motivated by a very strong sense of dissatisfaction with the traditional methods and paradigms of contemporary jurisprudence, especially with those ones of legal argumentation. Traditional jurisprudence committed to a model of legal unity, does not for the most part seeks to describe how the views of legal actors interact with the views of other legal actors/participants of legal discourse in real situations of legal communication. Thus, it was the consideration of legal communication as a semiotic activity that caused us to doubt that law could be conceived in terms of traditional legal concepts. Legal semiotics can be regarded as a major advance because it debunks the prevailing assumptions about the nature of legal reasoning and replaces them with what seems a far superior explanation. The main scientific objectives of this dissertation can be briefly formulated as follows: 1) to develop a conceptual framework for practical handling of complex problems of legal argumentation as they occur in the stages of legal communication; 2) to assess issues of compatibility/conflict between existing methods of legal reasoning and our semiotic model of legal reasoning; 3) to bridge the compatible aspects of different theories/models of legal argumentation to establish a generalizable model of legal argumentation.

Americans will have to start fighting their own stupidity instead of further exhausting the country's (and the world's) resources in wars and entitlement measures. America has to "reset" herself, within an authentic democratic process, on a foundation appropriate to the integrated world of the global information age.

Annotation: In this study, Gabriel Pareyon presents a theory of musical meaning formation in the context of intersemiosis, that is, the translation of meaning from one cognitive domain to another cognitive domain (e.g. from mathematics to music, or to speech or graphic forms). From this perspective, the degree of coherence of a musical systems relies on a synecdochic intersemiosis: a system of related signs within other comparable and correlated systems. The author analyzes the modalities of such correlations, exploring their general and particular traits, and their operational bounds. Accordingly, the notion analofy is used as a rich concept through its two definitions quoted by the classical literature - proportion and paradigm, enormously valuable in establishinf mesurement, likeness and affinity criteria. At the same time, original arguments by Benoit B. Mandelbrot (1924-2010) are revised, alongside a systematic critique of the literature on the subject. In fact, connecting Charles S. Peirce!s synechism with Mandelbrot's fractality is on of the main developnets of the presents study.

Annotation: The PhD thesis is a piece of research into the nature of theoretical constructions in various academic disciplines. Drawing on a close analysis of some theoretical works in the field of semiotics, philosophy and politics, it distinguishes between totalizing and detotalizing ways of dealing with the phenomenal multiplicity which always confronts researchers when the construction of a theory is at stake. Theoretical procedures of totalization constitute phenomenal multiplicity into self-enclosed wholes and erase their remains. The thesis considers this kind of procedure from a temporal point of view, focusing on the theories of temporality elaborated by St. Augustine and Edmund Husserl and, from a systemic point of view, focusing on the theory of the (linguistic) system elaborated by Ferdinand de Saussure. Martin Heidegger's critique of the notion of 'presence' and Karl Marx's critique of the notion of 'value' are examined as problematizing the main instruments of temporal and systemic totalization respectively. Still, both Heidegger and Marx lingered within the logic of totality, simply opposing a more authentic wholeness to an inauthentic one. The works of Jacques Lacan, Jacques Derrida and Jean Baudrillard are, in contrast, considered in the thesis as representatives of detotalizing procedures which claim the impossibility of self-enclosed wholeness drawing on the inexhaustible remnants of any totalization and a general principle of constitutive openness. Particular attention is paid to those aspects of Yuri Lotman's later thought – such as the notions of explosion, boundary and dialogue – which can be understood as instruments for theoretical procedures of temporal and systemic detotalization of this sort. In the course of the thesis it becomes clear that, for political reasons, the commitment of this research is to detotalization. This commitment is illustrated in the last part of the work. There, the attempts at rethinking emancipative politics elaborated by three contemporary philosophers – Giorgio Agamben, Alain Badiou and Jacques Rancière – are analyzed as theoretical procedures of political detotalization from both a systemic and a temporal point of view. Wholeness and its remains: theoretical procedures of totalization and detotalization in semiotics, philosophy and politics The dissertation examines the nature of theoretical constructions in various disciplines. Based on a close analysis of some written works in the field of semiotics, philosophy and politics, a distinction is made between totalizing and detotalizing approaches to dealing with the diversity and heterogeneity of phenomena, which always plagues researchers and scientists in the creation of theories. Theoretical procedures of totalization reduce phenomenal diversity to self-contained and residue-free wholes.The dissertation analyses such procedures from both a temporal perspective (St. Augustine's and Edmund Husserl's theories of time) and a systemic perspective (Ferdinand de Saussure's theory of (linguistic) systems). But neither Heidegger nor Marx go beyond the logic of totality, they simply contrast authentic wholeness with false and inauthentic. The works of Jacques Lacan, Jacques Derrida and Jean Baudrillard, on the other hand, represent procedures of detotalization that highlight the impossibility of self-contained wholeness, relying on the principles of the inexhaustibility of the residues of totalization and deconstructive openness. The dissertation pays special attention to those aspects of Juri Lotman's later thought – the concepts of explosion, limit and dialogue – that may be useful in developing such procedures of temporal and systemic detotalization. The dissertation contributes to detotalization for political reasons, which are revealed in the final section of the work. It analyzes the attempt of contemporary philosophers Giorgio Agamben, Alain Badiou and Jacques Rancière to rethink emancipatory politics as a procedure of political detotalization from both a systemic and temporal perspective.

Annotation: This essay is the third in a series of works devoted to musical hermeneutics. In the first, I dealt with the basic concepts of music ontology: movement, play, being and time, drawing inspiration from the hermeneutical philosophy of Schleiermacher, Diltey, Heidegger and Gadamer. Then, inspired by the thought of Paul Ricoeur, I analysed the conceptual category of musical narrative. Even then, in these considerations, the category of space appeared many times, inseparable from human experience in its temporal and spatial structure and, as it turns out, inextricably linked to the experience of music. In the reception of music, we are undoubtedly given a certain "temporal" sound-musical space.

Her book is part of a semio-narratological tradition of a single author or a single work research that tackles issues of wider theoretical import: applicability of the concept of "modeling" in the humanities, theory of mimesis and the function of experimental literature in ( post)modernist culture. By drawing on Y. Lotman's conception of artistic models, the book adopts the semiotic perspective on modeling as an open-ended heuristic process underlying the logic of discovery and creative thinking. It considers categories of narrative poetics as forms of cultural encoding that broaden and transform reader's modes of perception and sense-making. Micro-models active in certain contexts or in the works of certain authors function as mobile interfaces between individual sensibilities and complex cultural chrono- and spatio-types where time and space take on conceptual meaning.

Annotation: Live Samba takes as its main topic the pagode movement, which apperead in the 1980s as a re-invention of the samba tradition. Deeply grounded in the most idiosyncratic musical patterns of samba, pagode countered the hegemony of the samba-schools and their media appeal. Pagode, too, became a major commercial success. It appeared in a transitional period, at the moment the music industry was shifting its focus towards lowe classes of the population. As a result, pagode and other local-based styles led the way to a recoinfiguration of Brazilian music. The transitional nature of this moment is reflected in the ambivalent nature of tpagode meanings. Those meanings were firmly attached to the local sphere, while at the same time open to communocation with translocal levels. In Live Samba, the author analyses pagode as a practice comprising both musical traits and symbolic associations with other spheres of Brazilian culture. The book looks at pagode songs through the frames of the samba tradition, of Brazilian society, of the commodity environment, and of musical signification, and it provides an introductory survey of samba and of the Brazilian music indurstry.
