Notes: general editor of the series Elize Bisanz
Annotation: In this book, Peirce’s logical apparatus is used to explain some topics in biology where traditional scientific methods fail to establish the relation between the real and the virtual in the genetic script, the irreducibility of evolution to the genome, and the multidimensionality of the passage from genotype to phenotype. The interdisciplinary nature of this study consists in combining Peirce’s triadic logic, linguistics and biology; the author, as a linguist, draws out similarities between sentence construction and protein folding. Three main branches from the biological sciences are focused on: evolution, epigenetics and protein folding. The volume applies Peirce’s logical tools to demonstrate the universal validity of his scientific method in the current research.

Annotation: After a series of recent musical and artistic projects, musician, educator and theorist Július Fujak has also made a name for himself as a journalist. His latest publication is primarily a scientific and pedagogical publication intended for students of humanities, but its broad-spectrum content can provide space for reflection for those interested in diverse views and perspectives on current issues of contemporary culture and art. The publication is divided into two thematic areas: The first area, entitled Overlaps of Semiotic Studies, focuses on the field of semiotics of art, and the second represents Overlaps of Cultural Studies. The leitmotif of Fujak's work is precisely the phenomenon of overlaps between contemporary semiotics and culturology. Both disciplines, subject to development and transformation in current economic, social and cultural realities, find themselves (like many other disciplines) at an imaginary crossroads. They can remain in the closedness of now-outdated theoretical concepts or, in the words of Július Fujak, "become part of a revitalization effort to investigate socially culture-forming phenomena in the intentions of the necessarily complementary interdisciplinary overlap of the postmodern scientific discourse of semiotic and cultural studies". It is precisely the ability to observe and (re)discover mutual overlaps in the aforementioned branches of contemporary humanities that we find in the individual critically reflected topics of Fujak's current book.

Other title information: Numanistic Approaches to Music
Annotation: This edited book covers many topics in musicological literature, gathering various approaches to music studies that encapsulate the vivid relation music has to society. It focusses on repertoires and geographical areas that have not previously been well frequented in musicology. As readers will see, music has many roles to play in society. Music can be a generator of social phenomena, or a result of them; it can enhance or activate social actions, or simply co-habit with them. Above all, music has a stable position within society, in that it actively participates in it. Music can either describe or prescribe social aspects; musicians may have a certain position/role in society (e.g., the “popstar” as fashion leader, spokesman for political issues, etc.). Depending on the type of society, music may have a certain “meaning” or “function” (music does not mean the same thing everywhere in the world). Lastly, music can define a society, and it is not uncommon for it to best define a particular historical moment.

From the operator verbs of a text, to their complete and original chaining in a triple predicative chain, the work constructs scenarios of schemes in the theoretical framework of Applicative and Cognitive Grammar. It proposes an analysis of existing comparisons between the genome and the alphabet or the text, highlighting the need for levels of analysis. Through a series of analogies, and a reflection of this interdisciplinary fact, these structures of language are related to mathematical and biological structures: DNA, proteins, the formation of the embryo, according to levels of comparison. Constructed by its operators who implement a concept, the text unfolds from internal topological markers, such as the nervous system then the body following the neural cells. A textual topology becomes appropriate to describe this process. (translated with Google Translate)

Annotation: This book examines the progress to date in the many facets – conceptual, epistemological and methodological - of the field of legal semiotics. It reflects the fulfilment of the promise of legal semiotics when used to explore the law, its processes and interpretation. This study in Legal Semiotics brings together the theory, structure and practise of legal semiotics in an accessible style. The book introduces the concepts of legal semiotics and offers an insight in contemporary and future directions which the semiotics of law is going to take. A theoretical and practical oriented synthesis of the historical, contemporary and most recent ideas pertaining to legal semiotics, the book will be of interest to scholars and researchers in law and social sciences , as well as those who are interested in the interdisciplinary dynamics of law and semiotics.

Annotation: Translation Translation contributes to current debate on the question of translation dealt with in an interdisciplinary perspective, with implications not only of a theoretical order but also of the didactic and the practical orders. In the context of globalization the question of translation is fundamental for education and responds to new community needs with reference to Europe and more extensively to the international world. In its most obvious sense translation concerns verbal texts and their relations among different languages. However, to remain within the sphere of verbal signs, languages consist of a plurality of different languages that also relate to each other through translation processes. Moreover, translation occurs between verbal languages and nonverbal languages and among nonverbal languages without necessarily involving verbal languages. Thus far the allusion is to translation processes within the sphere of anthroposemiosis. But translation occurs among signs and the signs implicated are those of the semiosic sphere in its totality, which are not exclusively signs of the linguistic-verbal order. Beyond anthroposemiosis, translation is a fact of life and invests the entire biosphere or biosemiosphere, as clearly evidenced by research in “biosemiotics”, for where there is life there are signs, and where there are signs or semiosic processes there is translation, indeed semiosic processes are translation processes. According to this approach reflection on translation obviously cannot be restricted to the domain of linguistics but must necessarily involve semiotics, the general science or theory of signs. In this theoretical framework essays have been included not only from major translation experts, but also from researchers working in different areas, in addition to semiotics and linguistics, also philosophy, literary criticism, cultural studies, gender studies, biology, and the medical sciences. All scholars work on problems of translation in the light of their own special competencies and interests.

Annotation: This volume expplores how advances in the field of cognitive science can be incorporated into the study of literary interpretation. The last two decades have seen the establishment of cognitive studies as a valuable interdisciplinary approach in the humanities and beyond, However, what it can- or could- offer to the practice of literary interpretation is not entirely clear. In this volume fourteen papers by scholars from three continents address this issue.

Other title information: Modeling System Theory and Semiotic Analysis
Annotation: This book presents a methodological framework, developed from the field of biosemiotics, for studying semiotic phenomena as modeling processes. It presents a descriptive system for uniting semiotics and biology so that the "modeling instinct" can be studied in terms of its manifestations in various species. The book is written in an accessible textbook style, and can thus be used as a manual by both professional semioticians and students taking courses in semiotics, biology, and the communication sciences. It is composed in such a way that a broad readership can appreciate the fascinating research going on in a relatively unknown area of interdisciplinary study.

Annotation: The general topic of this book, miscarried justice, is suggested by the title's allusion to the sightlessness of th proverbial representation of justice. Viewpoints from several academic disciplines, e.g. philosophy, sociology, linguistics, criminal justice, literary criticisms, and religious studies, are brought together with theories of law. This collection is not only interdisciplinary, but cross-cultural as well. The common language is 'legal semiotics', in both a Peircean and non_peircean idiolect. This collection is a rich cross-referential research tool for investigators of law and semiotics in all its aspects. -cover
