Passions of Our Time
View details
Notes: edited with foreword by Lawrence D. Kritzman. Printed version in two notebooks
Annotation: Julia Kristeva is a true polymath, an intellectual of astonishingly wide range whose erudition and insight have been brought to bear on psychoanalysis, literary criticism, gender and sex, and cultural critique. Passions of Our Time showcases recent essays of Kristeva’s that demonstrate the scope of her capacious intellect, her gifts as a stylist, and the profound contribution of her thought to the challenges of the present. The collection begins with а vivid recollection of celebrating, as a child in Bulgaria, Alphabet Day, the holiday honoring the Cyrillic letters, which proceeds outward into a contemplation of the writer as translator. Kristeva considers literature with Barthes, freedom through Rousseau, Teresa of Avila and mystical experience, Simone de Beauvoir’s dream life, and Antigone and the psychic life of women. A group of essays drawing on her psychoanalytic work delve into Freud, Lacan, maternal eroticism, and the continued importance of psychoanalysis today. In a series of striking investigations, she thinks through disability and normativity, monotheism and secularization, the need to believe and the desire to know. Calling for the courage to renew and reinvent humanism, she outlines the principles of a stance founded on the importance of respecting human life. Finally, Kristeva discusses French culture and diversity, rethinking universalism and interrogating the potential for Islam and psychoanalysis to meet, and pays homage to Beauvoir by rephrasing her dictum into the provocative “One is born woman, but I become one.”

Other title information: Zoosemiotic perspectives
Notes: Editors of the series: Kalevi Kull, Silvi Salupere, Peeter Torop
Annotation: This book is a collective effort. Its authors belong to the research group in zoosemiotics and human-animal relations based in the Department of Semiotics at the University of Tartu in Estonia, and in the Department of Semiotics at the University of Stavanger in Norway. The two opening chapters are written and edited collectively and present a framework of philosophical, historical, epistemological and methodological matters of zoosemiotic research. These initial considerations are followed by specific case studies that have been conducted by individual authors. The specific chapters, however, have been cross-edited and commented on by other authors of the book so that the whole collection forms an integrated set of view-points.

Other title information: Bibliografinis sąvadas
Annotation: This publication is a bibliographic compendium of Lithuanian sheet music from 1990 to 2015 compiled in chronological order and presented to readers. The difficult period of restored independence, when sheet music publishing underwent fundamental changes, brought chaos to the field of registration. The ISMN Lithuanian agency began to operate only in 1994, and some publishers even after 1994 did not register their publications with the ISMN agency. As a result, there has been a gap in the registration of publications published aborad, which were registered electronically or in a fragmentary manner. The purpose of this bibliography is to collect and systematise all information about publications of Lithuanian sheet music since 1990, published both in Lithuania and abroad, and to describe them according to international standards. Jakobsonova sémiotická teorie
- Edition
- 1 edition
View details
Notes: Two of the books in this collection are inherited from Ludmila Lackova
Annotation: In my thesis I present some critical commentary on the semiotic theory of Roman Jakobson. This theory I view as an effort to establish, consolidate and widen of the nomothetic principle by using semiotic terms. In my view, to describe the basis of Jakobson?s semiotic theory means to describe the basic characteristics of his use of the terms sign, code and communication. With reference to the work of Thomas Kuhn, Nelson Goodman and François Rastier I introduce three semiotic frames, i.e. the general descriptions of meaning from semiotic/sign perspective. These frames I see as a mechanism of privileging certain kinds of question with certain privileged terms, i.e. sign, code and communication are seen as models that highlight speci%c problematic areas and simultaneously relegate others. I try to locate Roman Jakobson?s theory in these frames with emphasis on the model and de%nition of sign. The concept of sign as a complex signum or combination of its components is highlighted or distorted to suit the preferences of a particular frame. The result of this work is the description of the Jakobson?s conceptual relations between semiotic terms as the consequences of attempts to establish nomothetical approach across the semiotic frames.

Global Semiotics
View details
Annotation: The study of semiotics underwent a gradual but radical paradigm shift during the past century, from a glottocentric (language-centered) enterprise to one that encompasses the whole terrestrial biosphere. In this collection of 17 essays, Thomas A. Sebeok, one of the seminal thinkers in the field, shows how this progression took place. His wide-ranging discussion of the evolution of the field covers many facets, including discussions of biosemiotics, semiotics as a bridge between the humanities and the natural sciences, semiosis, nonverbal communication, cat and horse behavior, the semiotic self, and women in semiotics. This thorough account will appeal to seasoned scholars and neophytes alike."

La Traduzione
View details
Annotation: This issue of Athanor is a collection of contributions by specialists from different disciplinary fields - semiotics, linguistics, literary criticism, philosophy, and biology - on the problems of translation. We can distinguish them on the basis of two orientations. One consists in limiting the question of translation to the realm of verbal language or, more specifically, to the relationship between historical-natural languages, or, again, to the more restricted realm of literary and poetic translation. The other, instead, aims to broaden the field of investigation to intersemiotic translation, between different non-verbal languages and even outside of human languages, to the point of including translations of a specifically biological nature that are the object of study of biosemiotics - such as for example, the three different types of translation in the nutritional system that constitute the difference between plants, animals and mushrooms - or the cyborg translation between organic and inorganic made possible by current technological development. Annotation: The newcomer to semiotics is the primary intended reader of this book. Each of the authors of the various branches of semiotics open this perspective to all who want to know about semiotics, as well as to those who want to add to their knowledge of semiotics. The topics cover the major areas of semiotics and the human sciences: linguistics, theater, psychology, religion, anthropology, history, law, graphics, music, media, poetics, architecture, and a capsule overview of Charles Sanders Peirce. The individual essays develop each specialist's approach to semiotics, with full bibliography for follow-through. The introductory chapter points out the unifying themes that tie the special topics together

Other title information: The European Tradition
Annotation: While being concerned with the theory and forms of early narrative, the present collection of essays presents a history of narrative rather than poetics of narrative. Rather than offering to write a coherent narrative about the historical development of narrative before " the rise of the novel", the volume presents stages in the development towards that elusive and unstable form of narrative, giving the reader what in another context has been referred to as an "exemplary history" (Reed 1981) of narrative.

- Seventh Round Table on Law and Semiotics

Annotation: The general topic of this book, miscarried justice, is suggested by the title's allusion to the sightlessness of th proverbial representation of justice. Viewpoints from several academic disciplines, e.g. philosophy, sociology, linguistics, criminal justice, literary criticisms, and religious studies, are brought together with theories of law. This collection is not only interdisciplinary, but cross-cultural as well. The common language is 'legal semiotics', in both a Peircean and non_peircean idiolect. This collection is a rich cross-referential research tool for investigators of law and semiotics in all its aspects. -cover
