Other title information: Bibliografinis sąvadas
Annotation: This publication is a bibliographic compendium of Lithuanian sheet music from 1990 to 2015 compiled in chronological order and presented to readers. The difficult period of restored independence, when sheet music publishing underwent fundamental changes, brought chaos to the field of registration. The ISMN Lithuanian agency began to operate only in 1994, and some publishers even after 1994 did not register their publications with the ISMN agency. As a result, there has been a gap in the registration of publications published aborad, which were registered electronically or in a fragmentary manner. The purpose of this bibliography is to collect and systematise all information about publications of Lithuanian sheet music since 1990, published both in Lithuania and abroad, and to describe them according to international standards. A History of Biophysics in Contemporary China
- Edition
- 1 edition
View details
Annotation: This book gives a concise history of biophysics in contemporary China, from about 1949 to 1976. It outlines how a science speciality evolved from an ambiguous and amorphous field into a fully-fledged academic discipline in the socio-institutional contexts of contemporary China. The book relates how, while initially consisting of cell biologists, the Chinese biophysics community redirected their disciplinary priorities toward rocket science in the late 1950s to accommodate the national interests of the time. Biophysicists who had worked on biological-sounding rockets were drawn to the military sector and continued to contribute to human spaceflight in post-Mao China. Besides the rocket-and-space missions which provided the material context for biophysics to expand in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Chinese biophysicists also created research and educational programs surrounding biophysics by exploiting the institutional opportunities afforded by the policy emphasis on science's role to drive modernization. The book explores and demonstrates the collective achievements and struggles of Chinese biophysicists in building their scientific discipline.

Ulrich Beck

Other title information: Pioneer in Cosmopolitan Sociology and Risk Society
Annotation: This book presents Ulrich Beck, one of the world’s leading sociologists and social thinkers, as a Pioneer in Cosmopolitan Sociology and Risk Society. His world risk society theory has been confirmed by recent disasters – events that have shaken modern society to the core, signaling the end of an era in which comprehensive insurance could keep us safe. Due to its own successes, modern society now faces failure: while in the past experiments were conducted in a lab, now the whole world is a test bed. Whether nuclear plants, genetically modified organisms, nanotechnology – if any of these experiments went wrong, the consequences would have a global impact and would be irreversible. Beck recommends ignoring the mathematical morality of expert opinions, which seek to identify the level of a given risk by calculating the probability of its occurrence. Instead, man’s fear of collapse should offer an opportunity for international cooperation and a cosmopolitan turn in the social sciences.

Pragmatism and the forms of sense
View details
Other title information: language, perception, technics
Annotation: Making sense of the world around us is a process involving both semiotic and material mediation—the use of signs and sign systems (preeminently language) and various kinds of tools (technics). As we use them, we experience them subjectively as extensions of our bodily selves and objectively as instruments for accessing the world with which we interact. Emphasizing this bipolar nature of language and technics, understood as intertwined "forms of sense," Robert Innis studies the multiple ways in which they are rooted in and transform human perceptual structures in both their individual and social dimensions. The book foregrounds and is organized around the notion of "semiotic embodiment." Language and technics are viewed as "probes" upon which we rely, in which we are embodied, and that themselves embody and structure our primary modes of encountering the world. While making an important substantive contribution to present debates about the "biasing" of perception by language and technics, Innis also seeks to provide a methodological model of how complementary analytical resources from American pragmatist and various European traditions can be deployed fruitfully in the pursuit of new insights into the phenomenon of meaning-making.

Other title information: Principles of the new science concerning the common nature of nations
Annotation: Barely acknowledged in his lifetime, the New Science of Giambattista Vico (1668-1744) is an astonishingly perceptive and ambitious attempt to decipher the history, mythology and laws of the ancient world. Discarding the Renaissance notion of the classical as an idealised model for the modern, it argues that the key to true understanding of the past lies in accepting that the customs and emotional lives of ancient Greeks and Romans, Egyptians, Jews and Babylonians were radically different from our own. Along the way, Vico explores a huge variety of topics, ranging from physics to poetics, money to monsters, and family structures to the Flood. Marking a crucial turning-point in humanist thinking, New Science has remained deeply influential since the dawn of Romanticism, inspiring the work of Karl Marx and even influencing the framework for Joyce's Finnegan's Wake.

The Perception of the Environment
View details
Other title information: Essays in livelihood, dwelling and skill
Annotation: In this work Tim Ingold offers a persuasive new approach to understanding how human beings perceive their surroundings. He argues that what we are used to calling cultural variation consists, in the first place, of variations in skill. Neither innate nor acquired, skills are grown, incorporated into the human organism through practice and training in an environment. They are thus as much biological as cultural. To account for the generation of skills we have therefore to understand the dynamics of development. And this in turn calls for an ecological approach that situates practitioners in the context of an active engagement with the constituents of their surroundings. The twenty-three essays comprising this book focus in turn on the procurement of livelihood, on what it means to ‘dwell’, and on the nature of skill, weaving together approaches from social anthropology, ecological psychology, developmental biology and phenomenology in a way that has never been attempted before. The book is set to revolutionise the way we think about what is ‘biological’ and ‘cultural’ in humans, about evolution and history, and indeed about what it means for human beings – at once organisms and persons – to inhabit an environment. The Perception of the Environment will be essential reading not only for anthropologists but also for biologists, psychologists, archaeologists, geographers and philosophers.

The postmodern condition

Other title information: a report on knowledge
Notes: Translation from the French by Geoff Bennington and Brian Massumi, foreword by Frederic Jameson. Originally published in France as La Condition postmoderne: rappot sur le savoir (1979)
Annotation: Many definitions of postmodernism focus on its nature as the aftermath of the modern industrial age when technology developed dynamically. In The Postmodern Condition Jean-Francois Lyotard extends that analysis to postmodernism by looking at the status of science, technology, and the arts, the significance of technocracy, and the way the flow of information and knowledge are controlled in the Western world. Lyotard emphasized language; the world of postmodern knowledge can be represented as a game of language where speaking is participation in the game whose goal is the creation of new and ever-changing social linkages

Soviet structural folkloristics

Notes: Vol. 1
Annotation: This book is one of the results of the team work done in the Centre for the Computerised and Semantic Analysis of Myth at the University of British Columbia. Our activity is threefold: (1) investigation, development, and test of theoretical and analytic models (2) elaboration of computer programs for the semantic analysis of myth; and (3) actual analyses of Northwest Pacific Indian and of Melanesian myths. Our search for operational models and testable hypotheses led us to the recent publications of some prominent Soviet colleagues. We found these contributions valuable enough to deserve translation. A subgroup – T. Popoff, S. Reid, G. Quijano, M. Layton, W. Jilek Aall and M. Calcowski – studied articles published in German, French, or Russian, translated them and tested the approaches. We are happy to make the results available to our fellow anthropologists, folklorists and semioticians in the hope that better and ever more rigorous approaches will continue to heighten the quality of the procedures in our related fields. - from the introduction
