Other title information: traditions and innovations in contemporary music

Notes: This book was originally published under the title Musica mathematica. Tradicijos ir inovacijos šiuolaikineje muzikoje by Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater (Vilnius: Lietuvos muzikos ir teatro akademija, 2013, ISBN 978-609-8071-10-8)

Annotation: The concept of musica mathematica seeks to accurately examine the itnersection of two seemingly radically different subject areas. From the perspective of a European perception, the definition of the science of music was a result of the Pythagorean concept of universal harmony. The Pythagoreans were the first in European culture to raise the issue of uniting music and mathematics, sound and number. In the three parts of the monograph, versatile cases of the itnersection of music and mathematics are displayed, moving from philosophical and aesthetic considerations about mathesis to practical studies, discussing the interaction between music and other kinds of art (architecture, painting, poetry and literature) and providing a practical research of contemporary music compositions.

Obrazy dźwiękowe muzyki unistycznej

Krzystof Szwajgier

Music Akademia Muzyczna 9788387182779 Available

View details

Other title information: inspiracja malarska w twórczości Zygmunta Krauzego

Annotation: Zygmunt Krauze is the founder of a new current in art: unistic (unitary) music. He developed this concept in the first period of his artistic work, inspired by the unistic paintings of Władysław Strzemiński. Traces of this style are also detectable in Krauze’s later post-unistic works. Unistic music is characterised by a paradoxical unity in diversity. Most of the composer’s statements collected in this paper refer to specific features of unism in music. Other, more general comments concern the essence of music, the composer’s personal stance, the creative process, the autonomy of the composer, the audience and the performers, etc. Two longer texts by Zygmunt Krauze have been quoted in full. One can be considered as a unistic manifesto, while the other is a kind of personal credo.

Other title information: Volume II

Annotation: Music, in some forms, declares itself autonomous and absolute. But semiotics has taught us that no sign system can function alone, isolated from other texts. Correspondences and interrelationships of arts have always been fertile soil from which musical meanings to grow. Thus, among the topics of these proceedings, one finds music and painting, ekphrasis, interpretation, semiotic theory of music, pragmatism, aesthetics, topics, narrativity, music and media, opera, cinema, literature, music history, hermeneutics, dance and music psychology. Musical Signification is a world-wide research project that tries to open new avenues for an innovative science of music as a meaningful practice throughout the ages.

Annotation: The presented book is mainly devoted to the work, primarily musical, but also painting, of Zbignew Bujarski. Although the author's main interest is the work of art: music and painting, the case of the composer-painter is considered to be important, to a greater extent than usual, the problem of the artist's personality. Thus, creativity remains in a constant relationship to personality.

Other title information: their design and meaning

Notes: Original title in German "Der Manch un seine Sachen" (1928), English translation by Andrew Bluhm

Annotation: Discusses the elements of a sign, and looks at pictograms, alphabets, calligraphy, monograms, text type, numerical signs, symbols, and trademarks. This is a compelling study of the nature of signs and how people communicate written by the distinguished typographer Adrian Frutiger; who has illustrated his text with over 2000 line drawings. He reproduces numerous aspects of graphic symbolism from the simplicity of the T-sign to the ornamentation of the Australian aboriginal painting, and comments on the full range of symbols even including modern trademarks and traffic signs. This is the distillation of Frutiger's life's work and compulsory reading for all those interested in graphics, design, art, ornament and communication in general.

The semiotics of theater

Erika Fischer-Lichte

Arts - performing | visual Indiana University Press 0253322375 Available

View details

Notes: Originally published in three volumes as Semiotik des Theaters (1983)

Annotation: The theater is a particularly privileged semiotic object. Unlike literature or painting which operate within a single sign-system, theater combines a variety of sign-systems - language and gesture, costume and decoration, music and lighting - each of which generates meaning according to different principles. This complexity creates special challenges for understanding theater as a meaning-generating system. Erika Fischer-Lichte's book examines each of the sign-systems of the theater and investigates the ways they relate to one another. The result is a brilliant articulation of a semiotics of theater

Postmodernism, or, The cultural logic of late capitalism

Frederic Jameson

Edition
1 edition

Culture Verso 9780860915379 Available

View details

Annotation: In his most wide-ranging and accessible work, Fredric Jameson argues that postmodernism is the cultural response to the latest systemic change in world capitalism. He seeks here to crystallize a definition of a term which has taken on so many meanings that it has virtually lost all historical significance. He presents an extensive discussion on the cultural landscape—both ‘high’ and ‘low’—of postmodernity, evaluating the political fortunes of the new term and surveying postmodern developments in a range of different fields—from market ideology to architecture, from painting and instalment art to contemporary punk film, from video art and high literature to deconstruction. Finally, Jameson revaluates the concept of postmodernism in light of postmodern critiques of totalization and historical narratives—from the notion of decadence to the dynamics of small groups, from religious fundamentalism to hi-tech science fiction—while touching on the nature of contemporary cultural critique and the possibilities of cognitive mapping in the present multinational world system. This provocative book will be fundamental to all future discussions of postmodernism.

The iconography of landscape

edited by Denis Cosgrove | Stephen Daniels

Space Cambridge University Press 0521324378 Available

View details

Annotation: The Iconography of Landscape draws together fourteen scholars from diverse disciplines across the humanities and social sciences to explicate the status of landscape as a cultural image, 'a pictorial way of representing, structuring or symbolising surroundings'. By applying the art-historical method of iconography - interpreting levels of meaning in human artifacts - to landscapes on paper or canvas, in literary form or on its ground, its contributors show how landscape is an important mode of human signification, informed by, and itself informing, social, cultural and political issues. The range of examples is wide in terms of medium, period and place. It covers poetry and promotional literature, architectural design and urban ceremonial, maps and paintings. The historical periods discussed include sixteenth-century Italy, eighteenth-century England, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Scotland and twentieth-century Canada. The book is introduced by the editors' discussion of the meanings of landscape and of the iconographic method in the context of contemporary theoretical and methodological debates on culture and society
