Companion to European Heritage Revivals
View details
Annotation: This Companion to European Heritage Revivals offers inspiration and new ideas to those who want to engage a large, international audience in activities which bring the past to life. It offers a critical examination of the field's basic concepts and discusses a vast array of 'heritage revival tools', including games, historical re-enactments, 3D-visualisations, films, television documentaries, spatial designs and, most importantly, international heritage routes. Through many case studies, this book demonstrates how various aspects of heritage can be effectively presented by linking historical places and landscapes in a single revival to create a multifaceted but coherent whole.

Biosemiotics
View details
Other title information: An examination into the signs of life and the life of signs
Notes: originally published in Danish as Biosemiotik. En afhandling om livets tegn og tegnenes liv (2005)
Annotation: Recent debates surrounding the teaching of biology divide participants into three camps based on how they explain the appearance of the human race: evolution, creationism, or intelligent design. Biosemiotics discovers an intriguing higher ground respecting those opposing theories by arguing that questions of meaning and experiential life can be integrated into the scientific study of nature. This groundbreaking book shows how the linguistic powers of humans imply that consciousness emerges in the evolutionary process and that life is based on sign action, not just molecular interaction. Biosemiotics will be essential reading for anyone interested in the nexus of linguistic possibility and biological reality.

Estrategias globales

Other title information: Publicidad, marcas y semiocapitalismo
Annotation: deSignis once again places the problem of branding and advertising on the stratospheric stage within the framework of global strategies in post-industrial societies. Many authors have deeply appreciated the importance of objects and value systems that come into play in consumer society. As has been repeatedly pointed out, the commodity has a semiotic component since the exchange of goods has numerous concomitances with the exchange of messages, an idea that was present in Marx, also in Saussire and explicitly raised in the classic texts of Baudrillard and Rossi-Landi. Signs and Symbols
View details
Other title information: their design and meaning
Notes: Original title in German "Der Manch un seine Sachen" (1928), English translation by Andrew Bluhm
Annotation: Discusses the elements of a sign, and looks at pictograms, alphabets, calligraphy, monograms, text type, numerical signs, symbols, and trademarks. This is a compelling study of the nature of signs and how people communicate written by the distinguished typographer Adrian Frutiger; who has illustrated his text with over 2000 line drawings. He reproduces numerous aspects of graphic symbolism from the simplicity of the T-sign to the ornamentation of the Australian aboriginal painting, and comments on the full range of symbols even including modern trademarks and traffic signs. This is the distillation of Frutiger's life's work and compulsory reading for all those interested in graphics, design, art, ornament and communication in general.

The iconography of landscape
View details
Annotation: The Iconography of Landscape draws together fourteen scholars from diverse disciplines across the humanities and social sciences to explicate the status of landscape as a cultural image, 'a pictorial way of representing, structuring or symbolising surroundings'. By applying the art-historical method of iconography - interpreting levels of meaning in human artifacts - to landscapes on paper or canvas, in literary form or on its ground, its contributors show how landscape is an important mode of human signification, informed by, and itself informing, social, cultural and political issues. The range of examples is wide in terms of medium, period and place. It covers poetry and promotional literature, architectural design and urban ceremonial, maps and paintings. The historical periods discussed include sixteenth-century Italy, eighteenth-century England, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Scotland and twentieth-century Canada. The book is introduced by the editors' discussion of the meanings of landscape and of the iconographic method in the context of contemporary theoretical and methodological debates on culture and society

Semiotics and legal theory
View details
Annotation: Semiotics and Legal Theory is an exercise in exposition, comparison, criticism, and construction. Jackson takes two very different intellectual traditions - structuralist semiotics as represented by A.J. Greimas and modern (mainly positivist) legal theory as represented by Hart, MacCormick, Dworkin, and Kelsen and by juxtaposing them seeks to clarify and assess their respective semiotic presuppositions, in order to lay some foundations for a semiotically sensitive theory of law. This book is designed for both jurists and semioticians. To facilitate access across the disciplinary divide, Jackson provides an abstract at the head of each chapter, which serves as both a summary and a conclusion to each section.
