Annotation: It is commonly believed that some approaches of structural semiotics, narratology and cognitive science have not yet succeeded in constructing a complete and coherent theory of literary character. The author argues that the primary explanation of the failure is the artificial separation between characters and their actions. One of the chief implications of such separation is treating characters in terms of structures, agents, actants, functions, roles, and signs, which obviously mean that actions can hardly be explained as intended, motivated, performed and experienced. Survival, as a motivation-based concept, is one of the key concepts making the separation between character and action something impossible. Humans in literary narratives search for survival as an aware process of knowing and meaning making. Meaning in literary narratives can be produced by heroizability, which treats literary characters as living anthroposemiotic entities aware of their natural motivation to achieve in order to survive and produce meanings of their survival. As such, characters in literary narratives have active cognitions, and their cognitive activities remain meaningless without a process of semiosis. Applying Anthroposemiotic theory with Modeling System Theory, heroizability provides methodical tools to explain how the narrative text is represented and, thus, how it is to be interpreted properly by the reader not only to find, but also to make meaning in narrative world.

Annotation: Algirdas Julien Greimas (born Algirdas Julius Greimas) is one the most prominent creators of semiotics who laid the foundations of the Paris School of Semiotics known all over the world. He was also a famous linguist who researched Lithuanian mythology. Algirdas Julien Greimas is one of the most prominent Lithuanians in the international world of science, in many aspects compared to Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The greatest influence on the life and works of Greimas came from French culture renowned for its science, literature and art. Nevertheless, the time spent in Lithuania was also significant. Greimas himself viewed Lithuanian and western (French) periods of his life as correlation between two cultures. Therefore, every moment of his life is important to us, each moment contributing to the whole picture and enriching his life. Neither Greimas' childhood nor his youth which is the genesis of intellectual and aesthetic signs is reviewed in literature. Various authors tend to start writing Greimas'biography starting from his years in Vytautas Magnus University. Professor Eero Tarasti, the president of the International Association for Semiotic Studies, offered me to prepare a work about Greimas' life in Lithuania. As I myself studied in Kupiškis and knew a lot of things about the Greimas family, I decided to look at Greimas'childhood period in Kupiškis. The sources I used in this work are as follows: Greimas' words about his childhood, national and personal archives, press of those days and stories told by those who knew the Greimas family.My experience with exceptionally gifted children in National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art in Vilnius and consulting with famous scientist has helped me to discuss the genesis of intellectual and aesthetic signs in Greimas' biography. As for the form of the work, I have chosen to use the form of an exposition with elements of a poster presentation, which allowed me to participate in significant scientific forums in France, Finland, Russia and China. In Lithuania, in those places where Greimas lived, my exposition contributed to the studies of his biography, organisation of conferences and dedication to Greimas. As it turned out, the prestigious gymnasiums where Greimas studied in Šiauliai and Marijampolė established in 1851 and 1867 have raised about half (9 out of 20) of those who signed the Act of Independence of Lithuania on 16 February 1918 and 12 out of 100 most outstanding persons in Lithuania in a millennium. In this respect these two gymnasiums are the only ones in Lithuania. It should also be mentioned that Greimas attended lectures in Vytautas Magnus University by famous Lithuanian scientists Mykolas Romeris, Vladas Jurgutis, Vosylius Sezemanas and Jonas Bučas who later contributed to laying the foundation for the science of semiotics.

Annotation: The present doctoral dissertation is an exercise in exposition, comparison, criticism and construction, and this is the result of a project conceived ten years ago. We have taken different traditions of legal reasoning, and by juxtaposing them have sought to clarify and assess semiotic presuppositions, in order to outline a theoretical framework of legal semiotics that would help to lay the foundations for semiotic theory of legal argumentation. These semiotic presuppositions have been the object of our study at the University of Tartu since our bachelor's thesis (defended in 2001) and master's thesis (defended in 2006). Our interest in legal semiotics was motivated by a very strong sense of dissatisfaction with the traditional methods and paradigms of contemporary jurisprudence, especially with those ones of legal argumentation. Traditional jurisprudence committed to a model of legal unity, does not for the most part seeks to describe how the views of legal actors interact with the views of other legal actors/participants of legal discourse in real situations of legal communication. Thus, it was the consideration of legal communication as a semiotic activity that caused us to doubt that law could be conceived in terms of traditional legal concepts. Legal semiotics can be regarded as a major advance because it debunks the prevailing assumptions about the nature of legal reasoning and replaces them with what seems a far superior explanation. The main scientific objectives of this dissertation can be briefly formulated as follows: 1) to develop a conceptual framework for practical handling of complex problems of legal argumentation as they occur in the stages of legal communication; 2) to assess issues of compatibility/conflict between existing methods of legal reasoning and our semiotic model of legal reasoning; 3) to bridge the compatible aspects of different theories/models of legal argumentation to establish a generalizable model of legal argumentation.

Annotation: In my thesis I present some critical commentary on the semiotic theory of Roman Jakobson. This theory I view as an effort to establish, consolidate and widen of the nomothetic principle by using semiotic terms. In my view, to describe the basis of Jakobson?s semiotic theory means to describe the basic characteristics of his use of the terms sign, code and communication. With reference to the work of Thomas Kuhn, Nelson Goodman and François Rastier I introduce three semiotic frames, i.e. the general descriptions of meaning from semiotic/sign perspective. These frames I see as a mechanism of privileging certain kinds of question with certain privileged terms, i.e. sign, code and communication are seen as models that highlight speci%c problematic areas and simultaneously relegate others. I try to locate Roman Jakobson?s theory in these frames with emphasis on the model and de%nition of sign. The concept of sign as a complex signum or combination of its components is highlighted or distorted to suit the preferences of a particular frame. The result of this work is the description of the Jakobson?s conceptual relations between semiotic terms as the consequences of attempts to establish nomothetical approach across the semiotic frames.

From this perspective, the degree of coherence of a musical systems relies on a synecdochic intersemiosis: a system of related signs within other comparable and correlated systems. Theoretical procedures of totalization constitute phenomenal multiplicity into self-enclosed wholes and erase their remains. The thesis considers this kind of procedure from a temporal point of view, focusing on the theories of temporality elaborated by St. Augustine and Edmund Husserl and, from a systemic point of view, focusing on the theory of the (linguistic) system elaborated by Ferdinand de Saussure. Martin Heidegger's critique of the notion of 'presence' and Karl Marx's critique of the notion of 'value' are examined as problematizing the main instruments of temporal and systemic totalization respectively. Still, both Heidegger and Marx lingered within the logic of totality, simply opposing a more authentic wholeness to an inauthentic one. The works of Jacques Lacan, Jacques Derrida and Jean Baudrillard are, in contrast, considered in the thesis as representatives of detotalizing procedures which claim the impossibility of self-enclosed wholeness drawing on the inexhaustible remnants of any totalization and a general principle of constitutive openness. Particular attention is paid to those aspects of Yuri Lotman's later thought – such as the notions of explosion, boundary and dialogue – which can be understood as instruments for theoretical procedures of temporal and systemic detotalization of this sort. In the course of the thesis it becomes clear that, for political reasons, the commitment of this research is to detotalization. This commitment is illustrated in the last part of the work. There, the attempts at rethinking emancipative politics elaborated by three contemporary philosophers – Giorgio Agamben, Alain Badiou and Jacques Rancière – are analyzed as theoretical procedures of political detotalization from both a systemic and a temporal point of view. Wholeness and its remains: theoretical procedures of totalization and detotalization in semiotics, philosophy and politics The dissertation examines the nature of theoretical constructions in various disciplines. Ainsi la présence est-elle observable, sensible, pir la vue essentiellement mais également pour l'ouïe et les sens intimes, l'odeur le goût et le toucher. La présence se dit aussi bien d'une personne que d'un fragment du monde, object état de fait, événement. Mais une présence divine, mystique out spirituelle n'est pas observable: elle est réelle quoique non matérielle. D'autre part la reconnaissance ou le saisissement d'une "présence" est une affaire hautement affective: les présences sont pathémisées et jamais les corrélats d'états purement cognitifs. Notre parsours consistera à l'existence sémiotique dans sa définiton orthodoxe, cheminement ponctué par des philosophèmes que Kant, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty et Lyotard ont exemplairement dédités. The book revises Rorty's dilemma of "autonomy" and "solidarity" as applied to Nabokov's work and offers new readings. It considers categories of narrative poetics as forms of cultural encoding that broaden and transform reader's modes of perception and sense-making. Micro-models active in certain contexts or in the works of certain authors function as mobile interfaces between individual sensibilities and complex cultural chrono- and spatio-types where time and space take on conceptual meaning.

Annotation: Translation Translation contributes to current debate on the question of translation dealt with in an interdisciplinary perspective, with implications not only of a theoretical order but also of the didactic and the practical orders. In the context of globalization the question of translation is fundamental for education and responds to new community needs with reference to Europe and more extensively to the international world.In its most obvious sense translation concerns verbal texts and their relations among different languages. However, to remain within the sphere of verbal signs, languages consist of a plurality of different languages that also relate to each other through translation processes. Moreover, translation occurs between verbal languages and nonverbal languages and among nonverbal languages without necessarily involving verbal languages. Thus far the allusion is to translation processes within the sphere of anthroposemiosis.But translation occurs among signs and the signs implicated are those of the semiosic sphere in its totality, which are not exclusively signs of the linguistic-verbal order. Beyond anthroposemiosis, translation is a fact of life and invests the entire biosphere or biosemiosphere, as clearly evidenced by research in “biosemiotics”, for where there is life there are signs, and where there are signs or semiosic processes there is translation, indeed semiosic processes are translation processes. According to this approach reflection on translation obviously cannot be restricted to the domain of linguistics but must necessarily involve semiotics, the general science or theory of signs. In this theoretical framework essays have been included not only from major translation experts, but also from researchers working in different areas, in addition to semiotics and linguistics, also philosophy, literary criticism, cultural studies, gender studies, biology, and the medical sciences. All scholars work on problems of translation in the light of their own special competencies and interests.
