The Making of Avant-Garde

Other title information: Tel Quel
Annotation: The present work will examine the constitution of Tel Quel's multipositionality (Boltanski 1973: 3-26), or funtion as a geometric locus, as the social creation of a symbolic good that combined all signs of intellectual radicality characteristic of the period. My aim is to analyze Tel Quel as a relatively heterogenous and changing object by exploring in a specific context its constitution, ascension, and decline as an intellectual avant-garde.

Landscape
View details
Other title information: Politics and Perspectives
Annotation: The term 'landscape' was coined in an emergent capitalist world to evoke a particular set of elite experiences - a particular 'way of seeing'. But other people also have landscapes. The authors of this book are Geographers, Anthropologists and Archaeologists, and they explore landscape as something subjective, something experienced, something that alters through time and space, that is created by, and creative of, historical conditions and geographical emplacement. The articles range in time from 6000 BC to the present, and in space from Alaska and Melanesia to Belfast and Berlin. They show how the cultural and political analysis of landscape cuts across many disciplinary boundaries and how perceptions of the land and its history are created, negotiated and contested

Towards a Semiotics of Ideology
View details
Annotation: The attention of this work can be attributed to a particular system of ideology that must be understood as the result of a larger project, meant to study the neo-realist Portuguese novel of the forties and fifties. This study can also, at the same time, be understood as an examination of a larger question, namely that of articulation among literary systems (especially periods and literary genres) and ideological systems. It is by keeping in mind the terms in which such articulation is possible that the recourse to semiotic theory as a foundation of this study is justified. Understood as code, ideology will be treated here as an autonomous system of signs that exists along with the literary polisystem.

Tracing the Semiotic Boundaries of Politics
View details
Annotation: The first versions of some of the articles in this book were originally presented at the Workshop of Semiotics of the Colloquium on Language and Politics, University of Helsinki, December 12-15, 1988, but most of the articles were begun only after the workshop. The articles are intended to be representative of the current multiplicity of perspectives in the field of language and politics in general and of the boundaries of semiotic studies on language and politics in particular. Here, both "semiotics" and "politics" are used in their broadest sense.

Intermittences du sens
- Dependent title
- études sémiotiques
View details
The intermittences of meaning are here, first of all, a plurality of objects of all kinds (novels, short stories or poems, in French or in English; literary discourses, exchanges of letters, snippets of everyday conversation; daily practices or aesthetic objects) that cross and that are punctuated by the return of the same question: that of the meaning of its emergence, of its modes of manifestation and even, one might say, of its actions. It is also from point to point and from one end to the other, the regulated play of singularities and recurrences, the alternation of constituted species and morphologies in the making, the interplay of discontinuities and sequences, on the support, and the dynamics of places and forces. It is, in the thickness of the texts, the reversible exchange between the vectorized space where the figures are deployed and the figural substrate that its prosody and its contours imprint there. It is finally and above all the way of accompaniment which links the score, the questioning of the meaning: not so much its grasp as its pursuit and rather than its escape, its fugue. Pandora and Occam
View details
Other title information: on the Limits of Language and Literature
Annotation: Evoking Pandora and Occam as metaphoric corner posts in an argument about language as discourse, Horst Ruthrof brings analytic philosophy to bear on issues of Continental philosophy, with attention to linguistic, semiological, and semiotic concerns. Instead of regarding meanings as guaranteed by definitions, the author argues that linguistic expressions are schemata directing us more or less loosely toward the activation of nonlinguistic sign systems. Ruthrof draws up a heuristic hierarchy of discourses, with literary expression at the top, descending through communication-reduced reference and speech acts to formal logic and digital communication at the bottom.
